Manufacturing & product development facility

Nutricia Liverpool is dedicated to developing and manufacturing specialised medical nutrition.

The state-of-the-art facility employs over 300 people working across development and manufacturing. It's a development centre for high quality medical nutrition to meet a huge variety of needs - from carefully controlled small volumes for UK and Ireland patients, to large orders for export to nearly 50 countries.

Changing lives

Our research reveals practical solutions to nutritional challenges in healthcare, making a real difference to patients' lives in the process. Nutricia Liverpool develops and manufactures medical nutrition for all kinds of patients at all stages of life, with a focus on early life nutrition and specialised products for metabolic disorders.

As well as the large quantities we manufacture and ship all the time, we’re also able to help patients in a big way, with smaller quantities. In the past we have carried on making small batches of certain products in previously discontinued formats, specifically for a few patients who find that the old format works best for them, and still want to use it. With our own manufacturing facility close at hand, we can do even more to help HCPs provide the best possible tailored foods for special medical purposes for patients.

Our Liverpool site is the only facility in the UK and Ireland that operates an entirely protein free factory environment

Looking to the future

Thanks to strong links to our innovation centre in the Netherlands, Nutricia Liverpool has a dedicated team who design and develop new products for our future pipeline. Our innovations rely on breakthrough research in nutrition and disease management, with evidence-backed nutritional products delivering real health benefits.

Danone in Ireland – Wexford and Macroom Supply Points

Since 2011, at our Wexford Specialised Nutrition Supply Point, we have reduced absolute CO2 emissions by 80%, while increasing production volumes by 50% over the same timeframe.  As a company, Danone is committed to becoming a net zero business by 2050 and reducing carbon emissions in-line with a 1.5-degree SBTi trajectory by 2030.

  • Our 2030 near-term targets are fully in line with the 1.5°C pathway and have received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative. We commit to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46.3% by 2030 from a 2020 base year. *

  • Danone Wexford has been working to reduce its environmental impact for over 14 years. The site sends zero waste to landfill, sources 100% renewable electricity and uses a biomass boiler powered by sustainable wood fuels sourced locally from sustainably managed forests in the South-East region. In 2023, 80% of the energy used on site was renewable.

  • Since 2011 we have reduced our carbon emissions by 80% across Scope 1 and 2, equating to 11,800 tonnes of equivalent CO2, and have implemented a year-on-year carbon reduction programme.

  • We have reduced our emissions by 20% versus the 2020 baseline.

  • We continue to invest in Scope 1 & 2 programmes at both our Irish Supply Points, and globally, as part of our Re-Fuel programme, our global energy efficiency and decarbonisation programme in our factories.

  • As a result of these efforts, in 2020, Danone Wexford became the first baby formula production site in the world to be certified carbon neutral by The Carbon Trust, an independent sustainability consultancy.

  • Danone Wexford also has a number of key environmental accreditations:

  • B Corp

  • Member of Bord Bia’s sustainability programme, Origin Green

  • Supporters of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan

  • The supply point is recognised as a Zero Waste to Landfill facility by the Carbon Trust

  • Holds international standards for energy management, ISO50001, and environmental management, ISO14001.

  • On this journey, we have been supported by the Government through Enterprise Ireland and the LEADER programme and worked with stakeholders in the South-East region, such as the Vulcan project, moving the supply point from heavy fuel oil to predominantly renewable energy.

  • Through the Vulcan project, supported by the Danone ecosystem fund from 2013-2016, we supported the development of the Irish Wood Producers’ Group. This group became self-sufficient in 2016, at which time Danone exited the project, but from whom we continue to source the majority of our woodchip. The Vulcan project and Irish Wood Producers’ Group created employment and economic opportunities for foresters in the area and is one we are incredibly proud to support. A key component and consideration of our plans is, at all times, ensuring we deliver a positive impact and benefits in our local community and the broader South-East region.
